Horror hasn't been a widely explored genre in massively multiplayer online
games thus far, but there seems to be a shift in focus in the industry
away from fantasy titles.

Darren over at The Common Sense Gamer came across an interesting bit of information regarding World of Darkness -- the next massively multiplayer online game from CCP Games, creators of EVE Online.

Horror fans eager to find details about the upcoming title turned up a
business document (dated July 2008) from CCP Games that states World of Darkness is scheduled to launch in 2010.

Darren also makes a good point in his post -- there are a number of people who like the idea of EVE, but haven't been able to get immersed in the game. Given that the World of Darkness setting already has earned quite a number of
RPG fans over the years, it seems the title is in a position to have a
decent-sized following right off the bat. Or, at the very least, is likely to garner a number of people willing to try it out.
CCP Games apparently feels the same way, as stated in the Registration Document: "Given the World of Darkness legacy, its large fan base, and proven appeal to both genders, we estimate the subscriber potential of this product to be two to three times that of EVE Online, without competing head on with CCP's existing products thus enabling wider total appeal."

In terms of this 'wider total appeal', how do you feel about horror being
better-represented in massively multiplayer online games? If you're one of those gamers who likes some aspects of EVE but never made the jump into the game, does World of Darkness -- and its modern setting populated with vampires, werewolves, and mages -- hold more appeal for you?

well they keeping the details of the mmo a secret so not much is known about the game.

ppl are even speculating it could be fps mmo style instead of mmorpg style heh

if they going to be like counterstrike and go fps it will lose appeal to me,if they going to be normal mmo style then yeah it will be exciting to see what the makers of EVE online can do in a horror style mmo ^^

Details about CCP's World of Darkness are popping out of White Wolf's
The Grand Masquerade in New Orleans this weekend, and they're
definitely worth draining for every last sweet drop of... information.
While the game is still in pre-production -- and as such, nothing is set
in stone -- the devs weren't hesitant to dish out a lot of the ideas
and features that they hope will make this the best vampire MMO to date.

It's CCP's desire to emulate LARPing (live-action roleplaying) as much as possible with World of Darkness,
with plenty of metaplots running inside the game and without. Players
will begin as a mortal human who can make the choice to become a kindred
(vampire) or stay mortal for the duration of their characters' lives.
There's a very real danger that characters might experience "final
death" -- permadeath -- if they take too many risks. If you get in over your head, you can retreat to your character's Haven for safety.

The entire game will take place at night and on one server, and CCP is
definitely aiming it toward the hardcore set. Nudity, gore, and insanity
effects are all par for the course.

If players push outside of the acceptable boundaries too often, they'll
lose "humanity" points and could become flagged for constant attack by
other players and NPCs. Play your cards right and you may become the
prince of the city. The game will change over time with dynamic events,
and CCP promises that there will be real consequences for player
decisions.

As a vampire-themed MMORPG, World of Darkness developed by EVE Online's producer CCP Games will fill a deficiency in such themed games in the market. Recently, the developer has disclosed some details about the game.


The action MMORPG World of Darkness is currently in
development, but will present more real battles. The game will offer two
factions: Humans and Vampires. Along with the progress of the game
storyline, players must choose either faction as they wish.



Since CCP Games aims to make World of Darkness into a 18+ MMO, players will experience excessive sex, blood and violence in the game.


According to the developer, the game has integrated an interesting
system. If players do much immoral things, they will lose humanity
points. When they have too few humanity points, they will be attacked by
NPCs or other players. On the contrary, if they do some righteous
things, their humanity points will increase and they may become the
defenders of the city. Additionally, the game will add a large number of
dynamic events and the whole gaming world will change in accordance
with the dynamic events.


At last, the developer expressed that the game would bring players
unprecedented experiences and more game info would be revealed with the
further development of World of Darkness.

from shu:i like the idea of one server and perm death if u die too many times.just wondering if the server can take in so many or not and will it be heavily instance

i am interested in this mmo from 1-2 years back already.if we are playing this mmo we should pick vampire faction heh.i think most players will be doing that.they will prob give human faction a lot of advantage though if the ratio of players is heavily tip to the dark side so maybe human is fun too heh ^^

eh permadeath, and dark side being attacked by npcs a lot while the brave dudes won't
I see some trouble with that ^_^

Hope they dont shit over all the lore of the LARP White wolf, used to play when i was younger, it was fun as hell.
